Mud is fun – ask any Scout
15 February 2007
On Saturday 24 February, Scouting New Zealand is holding its first National Mudslide Day, not just for its own members, but for anyone, parents included, who want to let go and have some good, muddy fun.
Scouting NZ is issuing an open invitation to parents and young people, challenging them to hurl themselves down a muddy slope at any one of the mudslides being organised at locations throughout New Zealand on Saturday 24 February.
“A National Mudslide Day to mark the launch of Scouting’s 2007 national programmes calendar sounds like a great idea,” according to Scouting New Zealand CEO, Geoff Knighton. “We wanted to invite everyone, Scouts and non-Scouts to have some good, clean, muddy fun. This year we are rolling out a whole range of new programmes for Scouts designed to be challenging, fun and run on a highly professional basis. When young people share a fun, safe and challenging ‘first experience’ they also learn important values of leadership, teamwork, accomplishment and self-esteem. We are inviting everyone to join us in a mudslide and have a lot of fun in the process.”
A number of mudslides have been organised throughout the country and will be co-ordinated by Scouting New Zealand in cooperation with local volunteers and with support from local businesses.
For example, at Brookfield Scout Camp in Wainuiomata a small-scale mudslide for the under 10-years through to a larger-scale ‘wallow’ is organised, and at the Helensville A&P Show, a purpose-built mega-slide has been constructed.
The outdoors and camping have been a common and consistent theme throughout Scouting’s 100-year history. And after 24 February, so too will mud.
