Best ever speedfest in store

Best ever speedfest in store

It will most probably be the best Leitch Motorsport / Southland Times Classic SpeedFest since the event was instigated at Teretonga Park in
1994.

One hundred & seventy drivers including several international competitors, thirty - five races throughout the weekend and a special tribute to Drummond racing car constructor George Begg will make this a very special event.

The fields in the Classic and Historic classes are very well subscribed this year with an amazing array of cars worth many, many millions of dollars.

The Southland Times Saloon car races feature marques such as BMW, TVR Tuscan, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche, Alfa, Valiant Chargers and many more. The Turntru Machining Sports/Racing car events contain both an E and a D Type Jaguar, Morgans, MGBs and American James Herlinger in his Baldwin Mercury Special. The Clive Wilson Computers Racing/Sports car races feature names such as Lotus, Brabham and Austin Healey while the massive field in the Allied Materials Racing Car class highlight the star cars of the weekend - the Begg's. They will race against a Formula 1 McLaren, Lola's, Reynards, Ralts, and American Charles McCabe's Le Grand MK3B.

The Lone Star Cafe & Bar class races will feature many of the locals while the Noel McIntyre Drainage Clubmans Series will see one of the best fields of the season on the grid plus the first hometown appearance of Glen Brazier's Chev Corvette.

Of course the major highlight will be the Tribute To George Begg. Of the eighteen Begg's built in Begg's modest workshop in Drummond, sixteen of the cars will be on display in the Begg marquee over the weekend. Eleven of these will take part in a parade at lunchtime on both days while nine will be on track racing. Also in the Begg marquee will be the McLaren Trust on their first visit to the south with a McLaren M8 Can - Am car. Phil Mauger's Formula 1 McLaren M23 will also be on display while two other special cars - Bruce McLaren's former Austin Healey and a 1950's Series A Connaught Formula 1 car will also be on show.

Little River artist Dave Irving will also be in the Begg marquee painting commissioned works of Begg cars. His work is also available from Framed on Windsor here in Invercargill.

Racing begins at 10am each day and a weekend pass can be purchased at the gate for $25 while children under 14 are free. Discounted pre - sale tickets are available from Auto Centre, Tweed Street, Invercargill and GWD Russells, Yarrow Street, Invercargill until 5pm on Friday 16 February.

This will be an amazing weekend of top class motor racing with some fantastic displays and memorabilia plus a tribute to a truly remarkable Southlander - George Begg. It is the first event of Teretonga Park's 50th Anniversary Year and it is one not to be missed!
