New website makes finding local library easier

National Library of New Zealand
Media Release
28 February 2007

Just moved town and want to find your nearest library? Want to call your local library? Looking for a library's website?

The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa has just made this easier by launching the online Directory of New Zealand Libraries, available at http://directory.natlib.govt.nz

The Directory of New Zealand Libraries features:

- easy to use Google street maps for all New Zealand libraries
- contact details for all New Zealand libraries (including websites where available).

The Directory of New Zealand Libraries has been built primarily as a resource for the library and information sector, which can use the site for library business such as interlibrary loans.

"The beauty of the Directory is that it is a dual-purpose tool," says Penny Carnaby, Chief Executive of the National Library.

"The Directory will make aspects of libraries' behind-the-scenes work for their customers simpler and swifter, with special log-in areas in the site. But the data held in the site about libraries' locations and contact details is also very useful for the public."

"We have concentrated on building a site that works for both groups of users, with features such as 'simple search' for a library for the public, compared to 'librarian search', for librarians conducting library business online," said Ms Carnaby.
