This Saturday, 17 March, the Piako Gliding Club will be holding a public Open Day at the Matamata-Waharoa airfield. Part of the nationally organized “The Big Day Up” this is an opportunity to find out about the sport of gliding: There will be demonstrations of high speed competition finishes and glider aerobatics through to the chance to sit in a glider - or for the more adventurous even take a flight in a glider with an instructor. All ages welcome.
Guest celebrities at The Big Day Up will be Waikato-based Olympic rowing champion Caroline Evers-Swindell and District Mayor Hugh Vercoe who will be invited to fly in the club’s two-seat training gliders. Weather permitting, both two-seat gliders will be launched at the same time behind the club’s powerful tow plane in an impressive “double-tow”.
Club members will be on hand to make it easy to find out about the sport of gliding - and the social side of the Gliding Club. There will also be information available on Learn To Fly courses, the fast track way to learn to fly gliders with confidence and safety. For the really keen, they can even sign up for the course starting on 24 March or the course starting 23 June.
This will be Olympic Champion Caroline Evers-Swindell second visit to the club. After her first visit she said “Just wanted to say the biggest thank you for the most amazing gliding experience ever. Everyone was so lovely and it was the best way to spend an afternoon.”
The Big Day up will be held at Matamata-Waharoa airfield, Saturday 17 March. 11am to 4pm. Rain or shine. Further information: www.glidingmatamata.co.nz
