AK07 NEW YORK ARTIST
CREATES SKY TOWER MASTERPIECE
SKYCITY, principal
sponsor of the Auckland Festival, AK07, is pleased to
announce that Eric Orr, the internationally acclaimed New
York-based visual artist, has completed his first major
artwork on New Zealand soil.
Orr created a vivid, graphical display on three specially constructed 3m x 3m canvas boards around the base of the Sky Tower, which is open for public viewing until the end of the Auckland Festival, AK07. SKYCITY has around 17,000 visitors per day, ensuring a huge amount of foot traffic pass this memorable work of art.
Raised in South Bronx, New York City, Orr was one of the first visual artists of the early 80s to substitute typography for symbols and characters – helping create a new style of art in metropolitan New York.
SKYCITY Auckland General Manager, David Christian, says SKYCITY was proud to host Eric Orr in his first working visit to New Zealand.
“The Auckland Festival, AK07, is about engaging audiences by delivering fun and entertainment.
“SKYCITY is delighted with the magnificent works of art Eric Orr has created and we wish him all the best for his continuing work with young people throughout Auckland during the Auckland Festival, AK07.”
Eric Orr is excited to be part of the Auckland Festival, AK07. “It’s fantastic to see such enthusiasm for graphic arts in New Zealand,” says Orr.
“It was great meeting people around my work at the Sky Tower, and I’m looking forward to running my youth workshops around Auckland.”
Here for the duration of the Auckland Festival, AK07, Orr now moves on to encourage and stimulate the imagination of youth by facilitating regional workshops throughout Auckland.
