A Kiwi Double
There’s a local derby at the top of the charts as Kiwis score both the #1 single and #1 album this week thanks to Atlas’ Crawl single and the return of all-conquering Hayley Westenra with her new album, Treasure.
The Cantabrian songstress recorded the record in Dublin, Ireland, and this week it becomes her fifth hit album, her fourth #1 and her third to debut at #1 in its first week.
All of which helps her cement her place as our most successful female album artist in the history of the Official New Zealand Music Chart.
Hayley has the most #1 albums of any female artists (four), one more than Bic Runga, and her Pure album remains the longest-running local #1 of all time and third longest among all artists. Pure spent a total of 19 non-consecutive weeks in the pole position. Only two albums have done better - Dire Straits’ 21-week #1 Brothers In Arms and title-holder, Shania Twain’s 23-weeker Come On Over.
Treasure gives Hayley her 26th week in total atop the charts.

My Gift To You (Christmas album) peaked at #4
2003 - Pure (19 weeks at #1)

Meanwhile, Atlas have the longest-running Kiwi #1 in two years as they rack up a third frame in the Singles penthouse. Savage and Akon’s Moonshine spent five weeks in the pole position in early 2005. Crawl gains another places to #4 on the RadioScope100 as well.

And In Other Local News…
OpShop grab their first Top 10 hit as Maybe climbs three rungs to #10, auguring well for their new album due mid-year.
The independently released Perfect Drive by Mt Maunganui 22-year-old Luke Thompson, lands at #17 in the Singles Chart this week too.
“Perfect Drive is just one of those songs you have to get right,” says Luke, and it would seem he has. The track is the lead single from his debut set due mid-year. Luke wraps up a short tour on Friday at Happy in Wellington.
And speaking of Welli, Fat Freddy’s Drop’s Based On True Story is all set for its 100th week in the albums list next week. After 99 weeks on the chart, the album still holds steady at #24. Should they notch up the century (and it would be highly surprising if they don’t), the album will join Bic Runga’s Beautiful Collision as just the second local album to ever reach triple figures. Bic’s total was 101 weeks, seven days shy of two years.

The New Singles
#16 Lily Allen - Alfie
English comedic skatress Lily Allen claims highest new entry honours as Alfie (all about her younger brother) enters the Singles Chart at #16. It follows Smile (#6) and LDN (#23) from her #22 debut album Alright, Still.

#23 Gym Class Heroes - Cupid’s Chokehold
New York based Gym Class Heroes mix rap, rock, R&B, and more as they score their first New Zealand hit Cupid’s Chokehold from their sophomore Papercut Chronicles album. And is that Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy helping them out?

#2 Good Charlotte - Good Morning Revival
2007 proves to be a very good year for twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden, Billy Martin, Paul Thomas and Aaron Escolopio who collectively are Good Charlotte as they score their highest chart placing straight out of the box. Good Morning Revival is the band’s fourth hit set following their 2001 #12 self-titled debut, the 2002’s #6 The Young And The Hopeless and 2004’s #9 The Chronicles Of Life And Death. Their current single, Keep Your Hands Off My Girl, is #29 this week.

#13 Hillsong United - All Of The Above
The Sydney-based Church, led by expat Kiwi Brian Houston, lands its fifth and highest charting NZ Album this week as All Of The Above is new at #13. The church music programme’s first taste of chart success was a shade under 5 years back when Blessed peaked at #17 in August 2002.

#23 Joss Stone - Introducing…
It’s been three years since Joss Stone’s #8 debut The Soul Sessions and #5 sophomore release Mind, Body And Soul, both released in 2004. Finally Introducing… gives 19-year-old Joselyn Stoker her third hit set here. There’ve been two hit singles, Fell In Love With A Boy (#23) and You Had Me (#26) in 2004 for the Englishwoman.

#26 Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
An alt-rock trio from the North-West US, Modest Mouse land their first New Zealand chart set, fresh in at #26 this week. It’s another ‘overnight success’ that’s really taken seven years. Their previous record Good News For People Who Love Bad News went platinum in their homeland.

#39 LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
That second ‘difficult’ album becomes LCD Soundsystem’s first New Zealand chart set as Sound Of Silver enters at #39. While sounding like a group, it’s really one man, James Murphy. LCD’s first set dropped two years back.
