Easter Monday marks the close of surf lifeguard patrols

Surf Life Saving Northern Region lifeguards want to remind the public that the lifesaving patrolling season closes this weekend with the final patrol taking place on Easter Monday (9 April 2007).

Surf Life Saving Northern Region lifesaving development officer Andy Kent says after a slow start to summer the nice weather in January/February saw busier beaches and good conditions for beachgoers. Mr Kent also says that overall the public were supportive and listened to advice from lifeguards – but there was still the ongoing problem of surf safety messages just not “getting through” to others.

“We have seen a number of people getting into trouble while not swimming between the flags. While we can do our best to look after beachgoers we cannot possibly have lifeguards everywhere – hence why we have patrolled areas”, says Mr Kent.

Surf lifeguards will resume patrols on 20 October 2007 (Labour weekend).

“We would also like to remind the public that if they ever spot someone in trouble in the water to please dial 111 and ask for police”.
