Kings
Of The Chart
The Followill brothers Caleb, Jeffrey
and Clifford along with cousin Matthew hit pay dirt this
week with their third album Because Of The Times as
it takes pole position on the Albums Chart.
Straight out
of the box, Kings Of Leon dethrone Hayley
Westenra who slips to #2. Quite a remarkable feat for
an album named after an annual preachers conference the boys
attended while growing up.
Their debut set Youth And
Young Manhood gave them a brief taste of our charts
reaching #43 in August 2003. Last time out Aha Shake
Heartbreak made it to #29 for a solitary week in
November 2004.
Now That’s What I Call Fast
Now
it’s only to be expected that the latest Now hits
compilation would hit the top of the Compilations Chart, but
the franchise’s latest instalment has made it in
double-quick time, easily hitting the top spot on just two
days sales.
Even the Easter weekend trading hours
couldn’t slow the set down.
Of the tracks on the
record, five have been #1 singles: Akon and
Eminem’s Smack That, Nelly
Furtado’s Say It Right, Hinder’s
Lips Of An Angel, Fall Out Boy’s This
Ain’t A Scene... and Gwen Stefani and
Akon’s The Sweet Escape.
The New Singles
#14 48May - Big
Shock
Local lads 48May gain their fourth hit single
as Big Shock takes highest new entry honours at #14
this week, matching the peak of their 2004 chart debut
Leather And Tattoos. They just missed the Top 10
with their second, Home By 2, which stalled at #11.
Last October Nervous Wreck reached #21. Their
sophomore album Streetlights And Shadows which
features Big Shock drops later in the year.
#35
Kaiser Chiefs – Ruby
Yours Truly,
Angry Mob spent a week at #39 five weeks back now Leeds
quintet Kaiser Chiefs follow their New Zealand Albums Chart
debut with its lead single becoming their first hit single
here. Ruby is new at #35. Both album and single are
former UK #1s.
The New Albums
#1 Kings Of
Leon - Because Of The Times
See story
above.
#8 silverchair - Young
Modern
Australia’s new #1 album is new here at #8
as Ockers silverchair make it an even half dozen hit albums
in New Zealand. And for some reason three of them have
peaked at #8 (1997’s Freakshow, 1999’s Neon
Ballroom and their latest Young Modern, although
the latter may yet go higher). It’s the first release in
five years for Daniel Johns, Chris Joannau and
Ben Gilles who got to #7 in 2002 with Diorama.
Lead single Straight Lines moves up to #11 on the
Singles list this week.
#11 Timbaland - Shock
Value
Producer Timbaland’s Give In To Me
moves to #33 on the Singles list and #10 on the RadioScope
100 as he scores his first hit album here under his own
name, his second solo set Shock Value.
#18
George Benson & Al Jarreau - Givin’ It
Up
Two sell-out shows at Auckland’s Civic Theatre
last week have helped jazz vets George Benson and Al Jarreau
gain their first hit album together. George Benson first
charted 31 years back with Breezin’ (#9 in 1976).
Givin’ It Up gives him his 11th chart entry and the
first in just under four years. The 64-year-old Benson
collaborates on the set with 67-year-old Al Jarreau, who
charted two singles and two albums in the ‘80s.
#28
The Doors - The Very Best Of The Doors:
Anniversary Edition
It’s 40th Anniversary time for
the band who took their name from Aldous Huxley’s book
The Doors Of Perception. Vocalist Jim
Morrison died in Paris in 1971; these days guitarist
Robby Krieger and keyboardist Ray Manzarek
tour as ‘Riders On The Storm’ as drummer John
Densmore won’t let them call themselves The Doors.
Now the band’s first six albums have been remastered and
reissued along with a fresh compilation, The Very Best Of
The Doors, new at #28. It becomes the group’s sixth
New Zealand Chart set and their fourth compilation. All up,
they have racked up seven chart singles, the biggest being
1969’s #6 Touch Me.
#31 Hilary Duff -
Dignity
Lizzie McGuire star Hilary
Duff turns 20 in September and this week gains her
fourth chart album with Dignity, new at #31.
Metamorphosis opened Hilary’s chart account in
2003, peaking at #20. And last time out, in 2005, she
gained her highest charter thus far with the #10 Most
Wanted. She has racked up five hit singles as
well.
#39 The Fratellis - Costello
Music
Glaswegian trio The Fratellis’ debut album
Costello Music dropped last September in the UK.
This week, after hovering around on the Heatseekers Chart a
month or so, Scotsmen Jon, Mince and Barry finally slide
into the New Zealand lists at #39. Lead single Chelsea
Dagger is currently #32 on the
RadioScope100.
