Scouting Support for ANZAC Day
16 April 2007
Scouts throughout New Zealand are to offer their support to RSA members for ANZAC Day commemorations this year.
“Scouting has always maintained a strong connection with civic events organised for ANZAC Day, but this year Scouts are likely to take a much larger role in supporting RSA members at their commemoration services,” says Geoff Knighton, CEO of Scouting New Zealand.
“Part of the Scout Promise is to serve our country, and we regard it as an honour to show our support for the RSA, particularly on ANZAC Day,” he says.
Throughout the county on ANZAC Day, Scouts will be in attendance at services in the main centres and will be taking part in many of the smaller wreath-laying ceremonies. They will also be lending a hand with the RSA’s Poppy Day Appeal.
“The founder of the Scouting Movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell was recognised for his considerable military achievements,”says Mr Knighton.
“He later drew on his experience of courage, compassion and comradeship to encourage young people to make friends, face challenges and develop practical skills to use in the service of others.”
