Cinematic And Music Talent Recognised In Secondary Schools Short Film Competiton

New Zealand’s original High Schools’ short film competition is back for its fourth year and with a new category for the best original music score.

The competition, “Cut!” driven by the School of Media Arts at Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) has produced some remarkable work by young talent according to moving image tutor John Mandleberg. Major prizes will be given for Best Documentary and Best Drama with additional prizes awarded for other categories including a NEW prize for Best Original Music Score.

“It is a fantastic chance for students to make and show work that is challenging to produce, that provides audiences with a stimulating viewing experience and that succeeds as a piece of video-making,” he said.
This year’s “Cut!” encourages students to use local musicians and bands for their soundtracks. Entrants will also have the opportunity to utilise a CD of great copyright free music composed and performed by third year Wintec music students.

Ten finalists will have their films screened at the Hamilton Rialto Cinemas, there will be a range of great prizes including Apple iMac computer complete with editing software.

The competition is free to enter and open to any production team of students who are currently enrolled in and attending a New Zealand secondary school.

Entries should be between four and eight minutes and can be submitted on video (ie. miniDV tape) or DVD.

The closing date is October 12, with the winners being announced at the Rialto Cinema screening on November 4.
