LESS SCARED, MORE STRANGE
Sian
Torrington
Open daily from 11am.
‘Less scared, more strange’ is a wander through a tricksy subconscious realm. Among 1950’s lolly colours traipse bears, goats and swan women who gaze off into who knows where. Paint drips and hangs in pictorial space while paper cut outs rustle overhead. The old and now renewed buildings of upper Cuba St are honoured in collages which glitz them up and remember them how they were; beautiful in their cardboard and sequin homage.
“It is like some funny kind of wonky heaven. It’s where things go after they are sick of standing up straight and holding it all in. All of the buildings I photographed are still in the world but they have been sanded and tidied up and sorted out on their piles so they stand up straight. That’s all very nice but they lost something. I don’t mean to romanticize things which are broken arsed but it just feels like everything is getting swept up and tidied away and something in me thinks it’s a good idea to let things lie how they fall.”
Sian Torrington has previously worked in installation, building environments from paper. Last year she created a paper forest at ROAR! gallery, and is currently showing work at City Gallery as part of The Association of Collaboration.
