Wonderduck inventor in NZ for duck hunting season
Walter Solomon was a successful Texan banker when he quit his day job to invent the Wonderduck – the first battery powered duck decoy – which has since gone on to earn him millions.
A life long duck hunter he is in New Zealand for the beginning of the duck hunting season this weekend to promote his wing motion duck decoy business.
“I invented the Wonderduck in 1994 with my first decoy nothing more than a coat hanger with a white plastic bag attached to the end as it rotated above the decoy.”
“ I took it out to my hunting spot of 30 years and what followed was life changing.
“That single decoy in the space of only two hours decoyed in around 1000 mallards, with most of them landing right beside it.”
“When I told my wife I’d quit my job to start making these she thought I’d gone crazy.”
Solomon now has six patents for Wonderduck decoys and has exported more than 10,000 Wonderducks to New Zealand alone.
“I’ve long wanted to see the country these have gone to,” says Solomon, who is running a series of countrywide in-store clinics hosted by Hunting & Fishing NZ on how hunters can get the most out of the Wonderduck.
The duck hunting season opens on Saturday 5 May.
