¬May News
It’s time for us to immerse ourselves in NZ Music Month, which was launched at a busy showcase at Christchurch’s Dux de Lux by home-comers Fur Patrol alongside Pine, O.G, Dukes and other cool acts; and this is just a taste of things to come… And as our whanau grows, we’d like to welcome our new IMNZ members: Auckland’s CRS Records and Wellington-based Twig Records.
Much international activity is underway at the moment. Following The Magic Numbers’ recent Auckland show, support act The Nudie Suits impressed so much that they have been invited to join the Numbers on a future UK tour. At an all night singalong in a Kingsland bedroom the Numbers’ Romeo also confided that after an Amplifier download the Nudies’ ‘Songbook’ album became the soundtrack for the Numbers’ Australian tour.Â
The Dukes came second in the Australasian MTV Kickstart competition, being pipped at the post by Queensland's Yves Klein Blue. The Dukes also performed on the world's first Mile High gig en route to the MTV Australia Video Music Awards in Sydney.Â
dDub have just wound up their first Australian tour, performing 6 dates at last count. The WBC are touring Australia from May 3rd - 14th, with the band scheduled to play shows on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Sydney and Melbourne. This month Pacific Curls tour the South Island with UK musician Sarah Beattie and return to Australia in June for The Dreaming Festival in Queensland and NSW dates. one million dollars played some shows in Sydney in the last week of April.
Move The Crowd Records have released Tyree's album 'Now Or Never' in Australia via retail and iTunes, and the Papatoetoe native is blazing an 11 week tour until early June all over Aus with DJ Nino Brown. Labelmate Young Sid has just shot his debut video Hood Like Me and his debut album 'Undisputed' is out later this year. Ethical is back from a positive tour of China and Taiwan, where he toured 5 weeks with legendary NY DJ Roc Raider; his debut album will also be out later this year. 'Speed Of Sound Vol 2' mixed by DJ Manchoo is available as a free download for a limited time on MTC’s website.
Tracks from Recliner’s album ‘Rest Room’ has been heard on over 130 college radio stations in the US and Canada. Tracks have also been added to a swag of internet radio stations worldwide. They play a show at the Auckland Art Gallery on May 12 to celebrate NZ Music Month. Motocade were included in a recent Tripwire Podcast at thetripwire.com site alongside Dinosaur Jr and Idlewild.
4 Corners performed in Laos (South East Asia) early last month, and Telco Millicom Laos featured 4 Corners in their branding campaign and the crew did some recording with one of Laos’ top rap groups, the L.O.Gs. They’ve just released their debut album ‘The Foundations’ in Australia through Grindin' Records (under the Central Station umbrella) and completed an Australian tour. Australia's high profile hip hop DJ Nino Brown's ‘Blazin' 2007’ CD also features on the bonus DVD 4 Corners’ On The Downlow video.
Mr Sicc’s street album ‘Home Invasion’ is out in June, and 833 Records have also been at work on his 2008 double album ‘Cannibal Music’, which boasts guest appearances from US hip hop luminaries such as members of D12, N.O.R.E and Blaq Poet of DJ Premier’s label. Production is by Grammy award-winner Jared Gosselin (Floetry, Macy Gray), E-Swift (Tha Alkaholiks), Mykill Miers, Paris, Earth, Wind and Fire protégé Khayree and our own P Money. Mr Sicc’s website is launched this month.
Die!Die!Die! are in the States, they supported Wolfmother
on the last leg of their sold out US tour. That was followed
by UK, Swedish and German dates, after which they'll return
to the UK again for a London support slot for punk darlings
The Gossip. Amongst a host of other shows they've been
booked to play Brighton's Great Escape Festival alongside
countrymen Cut Off Your Hands, plus CSS, The Magic Numbers
and many more. The band have just released their debut
self-titled album in the USA and Canada.
This month sees
the Brunettes taking a new line-up around the country. Their
new album will be released through Lil Chief in New
Zealand and Sub Pop in the US in August. A tour diary from
the Ruby Suns’ recent tour is in the latest issue of NZ
Musician magazine, and an acoustic show they performed in
Paris for a popular internet show is now available at
takeawayshows.com - their clips rub shoulders with clips
from the Shins, Arcade Fire, and Jens Lekman among others.
Lawrence Arabia has put together a solid band in the UK,
which features Chris Garland (Betchadupa) and Rodney Fisher
(Goodshirt); one of their first gigs was supporting the
recently reformed Crowded House in Brixton. Lawrence has
some dates booked supporting popular Swedish band the
Concretes, as well as shows with Liam Finn and Connan & the
Mockasins.
Bulletproof (aka Jay Cyanide) did a tour of North America this year and is now taking to the road across New Zealand and Australia to promote the Australasian release of ‘Shake The Foundations’ on Concord Dawn’s Uprising label, the debut album fans have waited 7 years for. P-Money’s ‘Unreleased Joints and Remixes’ is out on May 21 on Dirty Records. Highlights include the previously 'mixtape only' track by PNC It's Ova!, Che Fu's 2D (P-Money remix) and Dave Dobbyn’s Oughta Be In Love (P-Money Mix). OMC’s single 4 All Of Us is on the shelves now for NZ Music Month. Tainted are planning to record with award-winning producer Clint Murphy (Blindspott, 8 Foot Sativa, Manic Street Preachers, Melanie C, G-Unit, Carly Binding, The Feelers) at York Street Studios.Â
Age Pryor presents ‘Shanks’ Pony’, the follow-up to his 2003 debut ‘City Chorus’; he also appeared on the Fly My Pretties series. The album cover features artwork by Taika Waititi, and Age’s tune I Don’t Want appears in Waititi’s debut feature film Eagle Vs Shark, the debut feature film by Taika Waititi which is stirring up international interest. Age and band hit the road in June and July for a nationwide Shanks’ Pony Tour. The Reduction Agents (featuring James Milne aka Lawrence Arabia) are also on the Eagle vs Shark soundtrack.
Jazz singer Carolina Moon released her album 'East of the Sun' at the Montana Festival of Jazz in Tauranga over Easter weekend, and it’s now available via Global Routes. Originally from the UK, Carolina first sang on the London jazz scene in the 90s. She then moved to Australia where she met her husband, New Zealand jazz saxophonist Roger Manins, and 'East of the Sun' is their first release together. Moon's band also includes local luminaries Kevin Field (piano), Nigel Gavin (guitar), Olivier Holland (acoustic bass), Chris O'Connor (drums) and Herschal (accordion).
Karen Hunter and Luke Hurley are still on their epic national tours promoting their new albums. The video for Luke's new single The Sound was made by Simon Raby who has been DOP on NZ feature films such as 'Lord of the Rings', 'Heaven' and 'The Ugly' as well as directing for television shows such as 'Rude Awakenings' and 'Amazing Extraordinary Friends'. Monkey has signed Tim Guy for his second album which he is currently recording with Anika Moa, Anna Coddington and Madeline Sami.
This month Miriam Clancy heads out for her last NZ tour for a while as she looks to catch up with some promising contacts she made on her last visit to the States. The impetus behind her debut album ‘Lucky One’ was largely driven by curiosity for her recorded material from connections of Kenny Rogers, Robbie Robertson and high profile Nashville producer Billy Block. Entries are open in the New Zealand heats of the World Battle of the Bands – to enter visit wbob.net; heats will be held in all major towns and some smaller centres. Also Intergalactic Records report that Slipping Tongue’s video Fixx is the most requested NZ video ever on Alt TV.Â

The SolidSonic Mini-Festival is coming to Auckland’s St James on May 29 and will combine at least one international act plus a variety of bands from NZ. Canadians Alexisonfire are joined by the City Newton Bombers amongst others.
