Practical Products Rather Than A Pampering
On The Cards For Mother’s Day

Auckland, May 9th 2007. When it comes to Mother’s Day, most enjoy the simple pleasures in life, according to a nationwide survey by The Warehouse which sought to find out how New Zealanders like to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The survey revealed that more than half of all Mothers would be happiest with the simple luxury of a sleep-in and breakfast in bed – but only 40 percent believed that’s what they would get!

While many Mums expressed a preference for a handmade gift, more than a third of them said they were more likely to receive something practical like slippers or a blender as their Mother’s Day treat. 42 percent of respondents said they would spend up to $25 on a gift for their Mum while 28 percent were prepared to spend $25 - $50. Perhaps not surprisingly, the survey revealed we are less generous to our Mothers-in-law than our Mothers.

The survey also revealed a subtle difference in a Mothers’ need for recognition between North and South. Nearly a quarter of South Island Mothers humbly said they don’t need to be rewarded for doing what they love, compared to only 18 percent of North Islanders who shared this attitude.

Interestingly there was an ambitious 4.4 percent (nationwide) who said they would like to receive a one carat diamond this Mother’s Day – but only 1.4 percent of respondents actually expected to receive something flashy!

The Warehouse Corporate Affairs Manager, Cynthia Church, says the overwhelming finding of the light-hearted survey was that Mothers are very family focused. “We found that almost two thirds would prefer to spend their special day at home with the kids, followed by a walk in the park and a nice home cooked dinner in the evening.”

The survey of 1,500 people also takes a glimpse at the relationships New Zealanders have with their Mothers and Mothers-in-law.

Ms Church says, “Our results show that New Zealanders are five times more likely to ask their Mother for advice than their Mother-in-law. And while nearly 53 percent of people described their relationship with their Mother as ‘extremely close’, only 13 percent said the same of their relationship with their Mother-in-law.”

Nearly 90% of all respondents endorse Mothers Day, believing New Zealand mums deserve their special day.
