Fish Out of Water track sparks feeding frenzy
GREYMOUTH singer Steve Edwards couldn't believe his luck when someone leaked his recording to BBC Radio and it became an overnight hit.
The song, One By One from his Fish Out of Water album which he was recording in London, was handed to a Radio Two producer and what happened next surprised everyone.
Without a video, marketing, a tour, or regional radio support One By One was made 'record of the week' and play-listed for 5 weeks!! Unprecedented for an unknown artist.
Distribution was hastily organised and the record was released. All copies printed sold, but because of distribution hic-ups the single was denied a certain chart position. The foundation had been set, Steve had proved his potential at the first attempt.
Over 5000 copies of fish out of water have already been sold as a limited edition on the 'net. Hungry for more, Steve is releasing One by One in New Zealand this month. http://www.steveedwardsmusic.com/root2/lyrics.htm.
It will be released via Do-IT Management www.doitmanagement.com in New Zealand and will be available on New Zealand on Air's Hit Disk in June. For further information, contact Paul Marshall, DO-IT Management, 0274-378637 e: paul@doitmanagement.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Steve arrived in the UK in 1996, a New Zealander, hungry to see the world and follow his music ambitions. Six months were spent working and travelling and while in India he learnt to play the guitar. From the very start songs flowed and though there have been a few 'air-bubbles', that flow has never stopped.
It was when Steve moved to Edinburgh that the opportunity arose to record his first demos. Working with Bob Heatlie, a number one selling song-writer, 'day in december' was the among the first tracks recorded, a song inspired by the child abuse suffered by a childhood friend in Greymouth, New Zealand.
It was clear to Bob from the start that this young Kiwi had something to say and with Steve's unusual haunting voice anything was possible. Bob suggested that Steve move to London and get in a band.
For a few years Steve played in various Rock/Pop line-ups including thawn, which played the usual sweaty clubs in London. It was through the guitarist of thawn, Chris Watson (LINK), that Steve met producer James D Bell (Jim), probably the most important turning point in Steve's career. Jim proved a worthy ally and the two were soon firm friends. Recording early demo's helped hone Steve's sound and his song-writing also 'moved up a gear'.
Frustrated with band politics, dodgy managers and constant line-up changes, Steve left to go solo and it was around this time that recording started for what would become 'fish out of water'. An album, which embodied an artist with one foot in credible song-writing and the other rather tenuously in commercial output.
Anyway Music Management, spotted Steve playing in London and signed him immediately. Managing director Ilenia Carli agreed to form a partnership with Jim's Company All Out Music, and Anyway Records was born.
Steve has now focused his sights on his home market of New Zealand releasing his debut single One by One in June 07.
