Duathlon Team Set For World Championships

Twelve of New Zealand’s multisport athletes are gearing up to take on the world when they compete at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Age Group Duathlon World Championships in Gyor, Hungary this weekend [19-20 May].

Stephanie Anderson [Wellington], Darren Blackhurst [Wellington], Jan Brosnahan [Dunedin], Sheralee Cleland [Palmerston North], Rhonda Cooper [Wellington], Brenda Fortune [Christchurch], Heidi-Jane Humphries [Wellington], Dion Jelley [Auckland], Andrew Leighton [Nelson], Jay Maciqulham [Palmerston North], Rog Nightingale [New Plymouth] and Ian Robinson [Waihi Beach].

The team has been selected by Triathlon New Zealand, which is also the organising body for the team.

Triathlon New Zealand Chief Executive Officer said the Age Group race in which the team will compete, features a 10km run, followed by a 39.3 km cycle, and a further 5km run.

“It’s a strong team competing this year and it’s great to see a wide range of ages competing,” Dave said,

“The youngest team member is 21 years old, and the oldest is 72.”

Team manager Heidi Jane Humphries said each member of the team has been training hard and is looking forward to giving it their all at this weekend’s race.

“As well as a mix of ages, the team features a mix of experience – for some the race will be their first World Championship event whereas others have competed in a number of world champs,” Heidi-Jane said.

“We’ve each got our own goals for the race and are looking forward to some great results.”
