Lynnette Brooky takes Supreme Award
Golfing Champion Lynnette Brooky is the Radio Sport Wellington Sportsperson of the Year for 2007. Brooky has now won the prestigious award for the second time, first taking the title in 1994. She has also taken out the Dominion Post Sportswoman of the Year.
Due to her golfing commitments overseas, Brooky was unable to attend last night’s awards at the Duxton Hotel. Brooky’s manager, Gail Allport, accepted the trophies on her behalf. In a pre-recorded interview with Radio Sports Graeme Moody, Brooky said “She was delighted to receive the awards and to be recognized as Wellington’s Sportsperson of the Year was a great honor.”
The top award for men, Tui Sportsman of the Year, went to cricket legend Stephen Fleming. In his final year as Blacks Caps captain, Stephen Fleming lead the national team to the Champions Trophy semi final as well as clean sweep over Australia in the Chappell-Hadlee series in New Zealand.
During the awards function the 540 people in attendance recognized three former sports greats, Ron Jarden (Rugby), Jack Tynan (Hockey) and Andy Leslie (Rugby) as they were inducted as Sports Legends of Wellington Hall of Fame.
Chatham Cup winners Western Suburbs Soccer Club, was awarded Exodus Health and Fitness Club – Club Team of the Year. It came down to a penalty shoot out but, for the first time since 1971, the team were able to hold New Zealand’s premier football trophy aloft.
Terry Serepisos was voted by the public of Wellington for the Mercure Hotel Personality of the Year. Terry, who is well known in the business world, has now extended his influence to the sporting scene where he now sponsors three Wellington sport icons.
“When the awards dinner sold out within a record three days we knew it was going to be a great night celebrating Wellington regions excellence in Sport”, Sport Wellington Region General Manager Michael Bennington said.
