New Appointments to Local Music Industry Boards
Changes have been announced today (June 12, 2007) to the boards of Directors at PPNZ and RIANZ, New Zealand’s two key local recorded music industry bodies.
Phonographic Performances NZ Ltd (PPNZ) has appointed Affiliate Member representative Mark Kneebone and its first artist management board representative, Lorraine Barry.
The Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) welcomes Warner Music NZ’s new General Manager, Phil Howling, to its and the PPNZ board, and Callum August of Dirty Records to the RIANZ board.
Lorraine is the highly respected manager of local artists Dave Dobbyn, The Electric Confectionaires, Lucid3 and Th’ Dudes. PPNZ extended the invitation to Lorraine as the board had long wanted an artist manager to represent the recording artist perspective and to present artist interests to the board.
Tardus Music chief Mark Kneebone replaces Bernie Griffen of Global Routes on the PPNZ board representing the Affiliate Membership. Mark is also Chair of Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ).
Adam Holt, the Chairperson of PPNZ and Managing Director of Universal Music NZ Limited says: “PPNZ is delighted that Lorraine has accepted our invitation to join the board. PPNZ represents an important income stream for record companies, artists and producers and we are delighted to have someone of Lorraine’s calibre and standing represent artist interests at board level.
“We are equally pleased to welcome Mark to the board. Mark has great experience and a strong understanding of the issues facing New Zealand’s independent labels both locally and globally.”
PPNZ is the non-profit organisation that administers the rights of local and international record labels, producers and recording artists within New Zealand. Established in 1957, PPNZ is responsible for licensing and collecting income from the broadcasting and public performance of sound and video recordings. PPNZ represents more than 960 member labels and collects and distributes royalties to more than 600 local recording artists and producers.
Meanwhile, the RIANZ appointments see Phil Howling replace outgoing Warners GM Jerry Lloyd on the board of the local industry association as he moves to take up the Warners reins this week. RIANZ Affilate Member representation moves from Bernie Griffin of Global Routes to Dirty Records’ Callum August.
RIANZ President Holt says: “We thank Jerry and Bernie for their excellent service to the RIANZ board and warmly welcome Phil and Callum. Phil is an experienced and skilled record executive who has worked with many local artists and labels over the past few years.
“Callum has made Dirty Records one of New Zealand’s most successful independent labels and his passion for the local industry is immense. RIANZ has made significant progress in many areas over the past three years and the appointments of Phil and Callum add greatly to that momentum.”
RIANZ is a non-profit organisation representing the wide range of interests of its 52 full and affiliate members made up of major and independent record producers, distributors and recording artists throughout New Zealand.
As an industry body, RIANZ acts as an advocate for the music industry, lobbying government to promote and strengthen the legal rights of all member companies and their recording artists, with effective rights legislation.
RIANZ is also responsible for producing the Tuis - the annual New Zealand Music Awards, and the weekly New Zealand Top 40 Albums and Singles Charts.
