MEDIA RELEASE
‘Mucking In’Scout Leader Congratulated
19 June 2007
The Police Officer and
Scout Leader who was the recipient of a ‘Mucking In’
(Sunday 17th June) garden landscape makeover, is well known
for his voluntary contribution to the North Otago community,
and for many years has been a key figure in Scouting
activities.
Derek Beveridge began his association with Scouting in 1967 in Invercargill and has made an outstanding contribution to local leadership of Scouting ever since. In 2000, he was awarded the Silver Tiki, an accolade that recognised his commitment to the Movement and his ability to develop leadership skills in young people through their active participation in Scouting programmes.
Scouting New Zealand has experienced an increase in membership since the introduction of new programmes, outdoor activities and further development of its range of National Schools. Currently there is a waiting list of young people wanting to join Scouts in all areas. “Scout numbers can only be extended when we have enough qualified volunteer leaders in place,” said Mr Knighton. “Our biggest challenge right now is finding enough adults with the skills to become Scout Leaders. Our experience is that young people are enthusiastic about joining Scouts. They are keen to be involved in activities, which are challenging and fun. However, we need to make sure events are safe and well organised, which requires involvement from adults and parents. Leadership is something on which we simply cannot compromise and we are actively recruiting for more adult leaders.”
Mr Knighton continues, “There was a great complement of Scouts to help with Derek’s garden makeover, and we congratulate him whole-heartedly on being selected.”
