The Chemistry of Three – New Artist Installation Projects
Curated by Scott Pothan
30th August to 7th October 2007
PAUL CULLEN – The Hall of Birds
HAMISH
PALMER – Moss & Moss
NIKI HASTINGS McFALL – Ua Fui
Fui Fa’qatasi Ae Vau ‘ese ‘ese’ (We have gathered
together from different parts of the forest)
The three
artists taking part in this exhibition separately and as a
group combine their intellects to give us a different view
of the commonplace with acute, quirky, intellectual
observation of objects we take for granted in our everyday
lives.
“I had no idea we had all these little
coloured balls inside us”, Queen Elizabeth II on being
shown various protein models at the opening of the
Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge in 1962 (de
Chadarevian, 2004, p347).
Niki Hastings McFall’s
forest (Vao) is a glowing cluster of flower covered lamps
–. Like human beings they are all unique yet share a
communal commonality.
Paul Cullen’s Hall of Birds presents Models which can make visible the past, the future, the microscopic, the huge, and the imaginary. Each sculpture in this exhibition is a model-like construction assembled from already existing objects such as furniture, pencils, books, plastic fruit and rulers.
Hamish Palmer's Moss & Moss is part of a continuing exploration into everyday aesthetic manifestations of relationships between nature and culture.
