Size does matter: Footnote proves it

The best things in life come wrapped in small packages – and to prove it, New Zealand's national contemporary dance company Footnote Dance present their 2007 Forte season featuring : Miniatures, choreographed by Malia Johnston.

Forte is an initiative by Footnote Dance to present work by an outstanding choreographer. Miniatures, first performed in 2004, is one of Johnston's most acclaimed works and has been re-designed for the 2007 Forte season.

Johnston has emerged as one of New Zealand's best choreographers; she is renowned for her breathless physical performances and is the principal choreographer for the World of Wearable Arts. With Eden Mulholland (from high-profile band Motocade), Johnston has formed one of the most exciting dance collaborations in the country.

With Miniatures, Johnston explores the beauty that comes with the small things in life, and the constraints and boundaries we burden our lives with. Footnote's dancers move gracefully through an intricately-designed, multi-dimensional stage of boxes, ladders, and precarious pedestals in a high-energy performance.

"Footnote is absolutely over the moon to welcome back Malia for the 2007 Forte season," said Footnote company director Deirdre Tarrant.

"She wowed us all with her work Broken by Design earlier this year in our season of Made in New Zealand and I think that Miniatures must be considered one of New Zealand's best homegrown contemporary dance works.

"The physical beauty in Miniatures will leave the audience astonished and in the finale of Broken by Design the energy and flight of the dancers’ moves is breathtaking " she said.

The Footnote Dance 2007 Forte Season of Miniatures and Broken by Design begins October 6 with performances in Christchurch then tours on to Dunedin, Auckland and Tauranga before concluding with two Wellington performances October 26 and 27.

"By turns astonishing, whimsical, hilarious, daredevil, lyrical, this is choreography with a joyous amount of movement, celestial physics and terrific team play" – Jennifer Shennan, Dominion Post (2004).

"Malia Johnston’s artistic depth and versatility were revealed... Her ensemble piece, Miniatures, was rich with imagery and invention" – Francesca Horsley, New Zealand Listener (2004).
