Danyon Loader puts lifeguards to the test

Yesterday a team of Auckland pool lifeguards won the fiercely contested Poolstuff NZRA National Lifeguard Championship held at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre.

The visitors beat the Wellington Region title holders by the slimmest of margins, with the Wellington B team lifeguards coming in third position.

The tightly fought competition saw 24 lifeguards participating in six events, including swimming races, rescue tows, CPR and resuscitation drills, and a lifeguard quiz, all held in front of an enthralled audience.

New Zealand swimming legend and Olympic gold medalist, Danyon Loader, and his invitation team joined in the competition, adding an extra element of excitement.

“There’s nothing like a bit of pressure to bring out the best in people,” says Brendon Ward, New Zealand Recreation Association chief executive, former New Zealand water polo representative and member of Danyon’s team.

“But the lifeguards rose to the challenge and performed well,” says Mr Ward. “This event was a great opportunity to showcase their skills, speed and determination.

“Lifeguarding is a vital part of our culture, without these keen, talented people, many swimming pools simply wouldn’t function.

“The Auckland team can be really proud of themselves for taking out this highly coveted championship. Wellington has won the competition since it started three years ago, so it is good to see the trophy move north.”

The winning Auckland team comprised of Kelsi Knight (Community Leisure Management Franklin Pool), Luke Heales (Community Leisure Management Philips Aquatic Centre), Glen De Koning (Manukau Leisure Services Papatoetoe Centennial Pools), Simon Mittermeier (The Leisure Centre, Whangaparoa).
