Eclectic Benefit Concert Mixes Hip Hop, Gospel, Soul and Brass

Wellington, 17 August 2007 - Four disparate Wellington music perspectives will come together in support of a common cause during a benefit concert in the city next weekend (Saturday, 25 August).

The Mission 'n Brass concert will combine performances by an eclectic group of all-Wellington musicians who seldom get the opportunity to perform at the same venue.

Vocalist Bella Kalolo, who has appeared in Dancing with the Stars and the hit movie Siones Wedding, will be singing a selection of popular soul hits and some of her own original music.

Legacy Dance Crew, fresh from the finals of an international competition in Los Angeles, will perform their own unique take on hip hop dance.

The 35-member Mission Choir, whose members are drawn from Wellington churches, will sing a variety of gospel and modern songs. The Salvation Army's Wellington Citadel Band will weigh in with Christian and popular brass music.

Wellington Citadel Band Bandmaster Chris Collings says the eclectic mix of music and high quality of the performers will make for an unforgettable concert.

'It's not every day that you get to experience hip hop, gospel, soul and brass all in the space of the same two-hour event.'

Mr Collings says the concert is a fundraiser in support of the Wellington Citadel Band's tour of Japan in November.

'It will be the band's third visit to Japan where they will give public concerts, including one at the Hiroshima Peace Park, as well as performing at a number of schools, hospitals, children's homes and rest homes.

'There's something about the band and its music that really clicked with Japanese audiences and they are really keen for us to come back.'

Adults $15, children $5, family (2 adults and up to 4 children) $40. Tickets available from phone 04-801-9278 or email: wellingtoncity_corps@nzf.salvationarmy.org Door sales available on the night.
