Applause for Common Sense Approach

PRESS RELEASE
New Zealand Council of Docked Breeds – 19th August 2007

Applause for Common Sense Approach

As the Select Committee recommends to the house that the Animal Welfare (Restriction of Docking of Dogs’ Tails) Bill not be passed, the New Zealand Council of Docked Breeds is pleased common sense has finally prevailed and hopes this spells an end to Political Correctness gone crazy!

Constant advocates for maintaining “Freedom of Choice” for the breeders of all customarily docked breeds this will allow them to continue a centuries old tradition of shortening the tails of dogs. Spokesperson Karen McIntyre hopes this decision may conclude the matter once and for all. “We trust the same common sense prevails when the Bill returns to the House for what we hope will be the final reading”, said McIntyre.

“The NZCDB has always maintained this is not an issue the Government needs to legislate on. It is wasting time and money in attempting to do so. It needs to concentrate on issues of genuine substance, on matters that need its attention because docking dogs in not painful and is not cruel. Genuine cases of animal cruelty deserve far more attention than this issue has received”, says McIntyre.
