Otago Take Out Uni Snow Games 07
Otago University, with their 81 strong team, have taken out the annual Uni Snow Games held at Cardrona Alpine Resort and Snow Farm this week. Almost 300 students from around the country have been in Wanaka this week competing in the Uni Snow Games where the competition was fierce. Otago University were led to victory with outstanding performances from Niki Begg and ex-Olympian Jesse Teat early in the week in the ski racing events, backed up with solid results from Brianna Bambric (Board), Claire Nash (Board) and Mark von Roy (Ski) throughout the week.
The competitors competed all week in a number of Ski and Board events including, Giant Slalom, Slalom (Ski only), Cross Country Skiing (Snow Farm), Boarder & Skier Cross, Slopestyle, Hip Jump, and Big Air. USNZ and Snow Farm are pleased with this year’s Cross Country event, which are double last year’s and the competitors thoroughly enjoyed the event.
Uni Snow Games Director Jen Lin Wong said “Wanaka has been wonderful in hosting us and we have seen some amazing competition across the universities throughout the week.”
Other athletes and results of note this week include, Phil Dominick’s (Otago University) continual dominance of the Boarder Giant Slalom and Boarder Cross. In the World Winter Games earlier this year held in Torino, Italy, Phil recorded New Zealand’s best finish after attaining 9th place in the Boarder Cross competition. Charlie Lyon (Ski, Canterbury University) and Andrew McPhedran (Board, AUT University) both pulled awesome tricks and jumps leading them to victory in the Hip Jump and Big Air events, and likewise Sarah Gillespie’s (Otago University) efforts in taking out the Ski Slopestyle, Hip Jump and Big Air.
