SOMATIC @ Satellite Gallery
SOMATIC @ Satellite Gallery
An exploration of physical form and sensation in painting photography and sculpture.
Geoff Budd - Moko
*******
This intense exhibition offers in-depth conversations between the tactile/sensual and the cognitive/contextual. A visual exploration of our physical sensations, somatic serves up an onslaught of talented artist's working in painting, photography and sculpture to bring lucidity and beauty to our animalistic under-bellies.
From abstracted, sensual sculpture to portraiture that touches laurels with the forefathers of form; somatic is an experience in sensual flux.

The Artists:
Evan Woodruffe
Evan Woodruffe is an artist
kindly on loan for this exhibition by Oedipus Rex Gallery.
With a deep passion for maintaining the traditions of
painting, his powerful portraiture offers intense
contemporary subjects in a skillful, old-world style.
Rudy
Whitehead-Lopez
With an extensive exhibition history, a
Masters in Fine Art and a nomination for a Nobel peace prize
under his belt, Rudy Whitehead-Lopez is a highly
accomplished painter and novelist, but however practiced,
Rudy's intense figurative work remains raw and passionate.
His jaded depictions of domestic life are as skilful and
beautiful as they are tragic and make a stunning edition to
this exhibition.
Michael Craig
Michael is a renown
documentary photographer who has exhibited here and in his
native England. From English football to Vanuatu 'bungee
jumping' Michael's unique ability to capture the human
dynamic all over the globe makes his work a real experience
to view.
Keinyo White
A native to the US now living in
Christchurch, Keinyo White brings the reverence and power
back to portraiture. With bold depictions of the human form
that transcend the watercolors they were crafted in, his
realist come dreamlike style is an un-missable experience in
the brilliance this little appreciated medium can achieve in
the right hands.
Nicola Bennett
Nicola Bennett was born
in Worcestershire, England. She studied Fine Art at Bretton
Hall, a college of the University of Leeds. Bennett
developed her experience as a sculptor working as an artist
assistant for sculptor Sophie Ryder. In 2001 she moved to
New Zealand and in 2007 completed her Masters of Fine Art
with a First Class Honors from Whitecliffe College of Arts
and Design, Auckland. Her tactile sculpture has shown in
both England and New Zealand.
Geoff Budd
Geoff Budd is
an award winning photographer who's sleek photographic style
and interest in cultural fusions bring unique perspective to
his craft. His exhibition on the international phenomenon of
'next-level' street-art 'shoe-slinging' at Satellite in Feb
07 was a highlight to our year, as you may know!
Dylan
Scott
Dylan Scott is an infamous Elam student who has
exhibited extensively throughout Auckland. His calligraphic
characters set in burlesque pastel worlds have made him a
favourite among art enthusiasts. My work revolves around
candy coloured creatures who don't wear pants. They are sad
because sad is easier than happy. People understand sad.
Melancholy is ubiquitous."
Tracey Archer
Tracey's rich,
raw stylized portraits of city night life are dark and
beautiful. Strong descriptive expressions in eerie
atmospheres; her time spent in hospitality and her love of
observation make these stunning works informed and
all-too-real.
Stewart Gilliana
With a Bachelor in
fine arts, Stewart has worked as a commercial photographer,
designer and creative director for the past 22 years mostly
throughout Asia. His abstracted studies of the human body
are tweaked with vibrant colours and grainy texture to
illuminate and objectify our ever fascinating form.

"We both place great importance on combining the health properties provided by nature with modern scientific evidence, to help consumers improve their health and well-being."
Manuka Health has set up a research partnership with the Technical University of Dresden to assist in the development of the manuka honey industry in New Zealand.
Dresden researchers have identified the compound Methyglyoxal (MGO) as the active ingredient responsible for manuka honey's anti-bacterial activity. Mr Paul said spin-off research would provide further opportunities.
A major Indian cancer research group is using MGO in trials across a wide range of different cancers with great success.
Manuka Health is also working with scientists to demonstrate the effectiveness of its Propolis products in the treatment of NF1 and NF2 neurofibromatosis, a type of tumour affecting one in 3000 people.
"Currently there is no cure for this type of cancer, but volunteers are being treated with Manuka Health BIO 30 propolis to at least hold the onset of the cancers or best case, cure them," Mr Paul said.
