Queuing Up For Artist Brad Bannan

Local art-lovers are lining up to meet acclaimed Christchurch artist Brad Bannan at the upcoming heART for Children exhibition and auction of works for charity.

Bannan is best-known for his Sea Series of works, which fit his belief a piece of art should entertain and amuse the eye. He is predominantly self-taught and has been interested in creating art from an early age. His eye for detail and interest in architecture led to a Bachelor of Design degree, specialising in architectural technology.

These days he works in acrylic on canvas and builds up a series of layers to a crisp finished painting.

“Over the past five years I have continually evolved my works into my own style of painting,” says Brad Bannan. “I like to add an unexpected focal point in an unusual setting.”

The Sea Series has been described as an original, modern and quirky look at objects, with the traditional element of a landscape painting. Red Tricycle (2006) is a typical work from this series and was a drawcard at last year’s heART for Children auction.

This year Brad Bannan will exhibit three works at the event and also be available to discuss his work with would-be bidders and aspiring artists, during viewing times leading up to the auction on October 14.

Bannan is one of 34 Canterbury artists who have contributed works to this year’s event. Each artist offers three works, with the proceeds from the sale going to the charity Family Help Trust.

The Family Help Trust works to reduce child abuse in our community. It works closely with families identified as being at ultra-high risk and supports them to establish new skills and routines without violence and crime. Its work is funded by events such as this art auction.

The heART for Children exhibition and auction will be held in the St Margaret’s College gymnasium in Merivale on Sunday October 14 at 6pm.

The works can be viewed between 2pm and 5pm the previous day and from 10am to 3pm on auction day.
