Brain
Power
A play by Dean Hewison
Throughout the year a talented bunch of high-school drama students have been participating in a series of workshops led by Centrepoint Theatre’s Artistic Director Simon Ferry. They are our Basement Company. This year they will be putting everything they have learned about theatre into practice with their end of year production – Brain Power by Dean Hewison.
The
Story
A murder has taken place inside the Vessel Michael
Sanderson’s brain and inside the brain a battle for power
ensues. With a torrid of Feelings, Concepts and Dreams will
the Vessel be saved from insanity? Will Self-Preservation
reign over Self-Punishment? Only one Concept has the power
to save the Vessel and they call him the Concept of
Justice.
The Style
Brain Power combines film noir with
comedy and tons of originality. It’s the perfect vehicle
for these up-and-coming performers to show what they can do.
The play has been described by reviewers as both
“fabulous” and “hilariously disturbing”.
The
Company
This is the second Basement Company production
Jamie McCaskill has directed and he says, “working with
students with such raw talent and energy is a highly
rewarding experience”. Jamie explains “being back in
Palmerston North is fantastic as I did my initial theatre
training here and Centrepoint Theatre has played a huge part
in my development as both an actor and
director”.
