STUNNING SETTING SETS THE SCENE FOR ANNUAL KAYAK RACE
The Meridian Energy Kayak Challenge will be held in the Mackenzie Basin over Labour Weekend at New Zealand’s premier kayak course.
The annual event, held in Meridian Energy’s hydro canals, is expected to attract a big turn out.
“The Meridian Energy Kayak Challenge is a popular event on the racing calendar,” says race organiser Hamish Patterson. “This year we are expecting over 150 competitors and even more spectators.”
Hamish Paterson says the location for the race is truly special for competitors and spectators alike.
“The great advantage
of this course is that support crews and spectators are able
to drive along 90 percent of the course to watch the
competitors. Combine this with the spectacular views of
the
Southern Alps and the deep aqua blue glacier water it
is easy to see why this event is so popular.”
The
weekend of racing over Labour Weekend includes sprint races
on Saturday and the premier event, the 31km Meridian Energy
Kayak Challenge – Full Marathon, on Sunday. There is also
a half
marathon race later on the Sunday
morning.
“The wide variety of races from the doubles category to the half or full marathon means there is something for everyone. The course includes three portages and has a real mixture of gravel and tussock.”
Mel Seyfort, Meridian Energy’s Sponsorship Manager, says it is a natural fit for Meridian Energy to support the race.
“We have supported this very popular event since 1999. Meridian Energy has a long standing relationship with water sports and as this one is being held in our backyard - on the Ohau Canals and in Lake Ruataniwha – we are pleased to be able to support it.”
