Rockburn Pinot Noir Earns 5 Star Rating in Cuisine

The 2006 Rockburn Pinot Noir has earned a five star rating and was named the second best Pinot Noir in New Zealand in the November 2007 edition of Cuisine magazine. Only 13 New Zealand Pinot Noirs received the coveted five-star rating from nearly 200 entrants to the "Pinot Forte" tasting.

Cuisine magazine is one of the most comprehensive food, wine and associated good living resources in New Zealand. Judging with panel chair John Belsham, international wine judge and winemaker-owner of Foxes Island wines, were Steve Smith MW (Craggy Range), Sarah-Kate Dineen (Maude Wines) and Jane Boyle (Cardmember Wines).

For international wine judge Dineen, the Rockburn Pinot Noir was "almost text-book perfection. Rich, with an intense, savoury, velvet texture. Silky, fleshy and fragrant with fantastic use of oak."

The 2006 Rockburn Pinot Noir was the first for winemaker Malcolm Francis. He joined Rockburn at their new McNulty Road winery/cellar door in Cromwell for the 2006 vintage, having spent four vintages as assistant winemaker at Felton Road.

Rockburn Wines has a history of winning gold medals and five star ratings, particularly for its Pinot Noir, at such shows as the Air New Zealand Awards, the New Zealand International Wine Show and the New Zealand Royal Easter Show. Most recently, Rockburn won a gold medal for its 2006 Pinot Noir at the Bragato Wine Awards in Auckland.

Just two vineyards are owned by Rockburn Wines, one in Gibbston Valley and the other at Parkburn. These vineyards supply all the fruit for its award winning Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All Rockburn wines are available to taste and purchase at the cellar door on McNulty Road, Cromwell.
