Whimsical book wins BeST Award

Whimsical book wins BeST Award

A “fabulously whimsical” book by Wanganui School of Design graduate Tane Williams has captured Gold in the country’s top design awards.

Eight other School of Design students and graduates also won a total of five Bronze awards in student categories of the BeST Awards, run by the Designers Institute of New Zealand.

Tane’s work, a book titled The Society of Psychokinetic Scientists, took the Gold Award in the Student Graphics section. The judges described his entry as “a fabulously whimsical exploration, beautifully crafted.”

The book has text, drawings and designs. Tane describes it as “definitely a strange book, with lots of scientific information but really all about how to move things with your mind.” It took him six months to create, with UCOL lecturer, Yeoh Guan Hong, as adviser.

Tane graduated this year with a Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design. He already has a hot job with Auckland street wear designers Huffer, creating T-shirt, web site and catalogue designs.

The BeST Awards winners were announced at a star-studded event held at the Aotea Centre in Auckland.

The eight Whanganui UCOL students who won Bronze, either individually or in teams, were: Brian Hainsworth, Thomas Pavitte, Emma Young, Tok Lee Heng, Wong Weng Wai, Pear Leelah, Yann Bin Tan and Kaki Ayam.

Tok Lee Heng and Wong Weng Wai are Malaysian students, studying at the School of Design on scholarships funded by the New Zealand Government through Education New Zealand.

The BeST Awards recognise New Zealand's best graphic, product and spatial design and provide an industry benchmark for excellence.
