Stalwarts Of The Voluntary Sector
The stalwarts of the voluntary sector are volunteer managers and co-ordinators. To celebrate their work globally, Thursday November 1 is recognized as International Volunteer Managers Appreciation Day.
Tim Barnett, a long-term volunteer and advocate for volunteering, and Member of Parliament for Christchurch Central, will speak at a breakfast forum being held by Volunteer Wellington to 'appreciate' volunteer managers on November 1 at the premises of KPMG in Customhouse quay.
States Julie Thomson, manager of member services for Volunteer Wellington: 'Whether managers or co-ordinators work with four volunteers or 400 this role is key to strong communities. Effective volunteer programmes result in volunteers moving around their various communities talking about their assignments and the cause of the group they are working with. The best marketer and promoter an organization can have is a happy volunteer.'
Volunteer Wellington works with more than 370 community groups in the Wellington region, sourcing volunteers and providing training and mentoring. Those who manage volunteer programmes are all welcome to the celebratory breakfast.
Listening to the experiences of others is always inspiring, said Julie Thomson. 'When administrators work well with volunteers, the voluntary sector has the power to change people's lives.'
