Enrol now for Artstation’s 2008 year-long courses
Anyone interested in developing their artistic skills in 2008 need look no further than Artstation, Auckland City Council’s community art centre in Ponsonby.
Already a popular destination for night classes and short courses, Artstation also offers four year-long art courses taught by professional artists catering for those interested in developing both practical skills and a professional approach to their art making.
Enrolments are open now for 2008 courses, including 360° An introduction to the visual arts, A Painters Progress, A Painters Studio and A Glass Studio.
“Artstation’s year long courses are a wonderful opportunity for students to work at their own pace and be guided in an intimate, friendly environment, without the pressures of exams and deadlines that come with tertiary training,” says tutor and artist Matthew Browne.
First offered in 2007, the 360° An introduction to the visual arts course, firstly introduces students to painting and drawing practice before expanding into printmaking, sculpture and photography. Art theory and critical thinking are also included in this course.
Michael Kennedy, a student in this year’s course says, “360° has been everything I hoped it would be. It is well structured and the support and feedback is fantastic. The fact that it is part time is great and the level was just right.”
Artstation’s glass studio is one of only two facilities in the country which has open access to the public. Past student Evelyn Dunstan recently won the prestigious Ranamok Prize for contemporary glass work, providing testament to the success students can achieve.
“Apart from being a course that taught a wide variety of skills, the glass studio course at Artstation also increased my dedication and helped to develop a disciplined approach to my work,” she explains.
All of Artstation’s year-long courses finish with an exhibition in the Artstation Gallery. This is a great opportunity for the public to see the high level of work students produce.
This years student exhibitions are:
• 360°
An Introduction to the Visual Arts, 20 to 24 November

• The Painter’s Progress, 26 November to 1
