Art Noise - New Zealand Tour

Art Noise - New Zealand Tour

exploring and pursuing new and improvised music by

The Crust

Experience The Crust , an inspiring Trio consisting of Reuben Derrick (saxophones ), Greg Malcolm ( guitars) and Sum Suraweera (drums and percussion).

Together these Christchurch based musicians create a feast of tones by interpreting and adapting the music of Steve Lacy. Reuben, Greg and Sum are committed to exploring and pursuing new and improvised music. All three have developed unique and distinctive playing techniques, which utilize many sounds not traditionally associated with their instruments.

Expect to be surprised as the group steers you through beautiful melodies featuring such death defying 'feets', with Greg Malcolm playing three guitars at once, Reuben Derrick's circular breathing and Sum Suraweera's broad sound palette.

The Crust's New Zealand Tour is a wonderful opportunity for audiences to see musicians with international reputations performing this strange and beautiful music to a high level. All the musicians have extensive histories.
Greg Malcolm frequently tours Europe performing at festival of new music. Reuben Derrick holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney where he regularly played with leading
Australian and international musicians. Sum Suraweera is a doctoral student in ethnomusicology, currently enrolled at the University of Canterbury, focusing on the area of Sri Lankan traditional drumming. In 2005, The Crust performed at the Christchurch Arts Festival to much acclaim.

The Crust share a passion for the philosophy and music of the late American Saxophonist Steve Lacy, who was widely admired for the beauty and purity of his tone, for his incisive melodic sense, for keeping his music
uncompromising and fresh.
