New Zealand Air Games Takes Off Over Wanaka

New Zealand Air Games Takes Off

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand - Air Sports Live, incorporating the New Zealand Air Games, took to the skies for the first day of the biggest air sports event in one air space the world has seen.

More than 100 pilots from 10 different air sports competed in the skies over Lake Wanaka in front of thousands of spectators, both on the airfield and live over the Internet. Highlights included top acrobatic pilot, Jurgis Kairys (LIT), world champion paramotor Mathieu Rouanet (FRA) and world record holder skydiving legend Antoine Montant (FRA), all of whom astounded the crowds with their gravity defying flying. Insights into the sports were provided by expert commentators while on-helmet and air-to-air cameras provided close-up images live to the big screen.

Bad weather unfortunately cut the event short with the model aircraft providing the last competition before high winds and rain stopped flying. Paragliding XC, hang gliding XC, speed gliding and gliding were all postponed until tomorrow, and only some rounds of the sky diving, microlights, aerobatics and model aircraft were able to run before the weather closed in. Results will be available at the close of the event tomorrow (Friday).

The New Zealand Air Games continues tomorrow (Thursday). Tickets are $18 for adults with free admission for children under 16 and are available on the gate. For those unable to attend the event in person, they can sign up to watch all the action through Air Sports Live at www.airsportslive.com free of charge on the low resolution service or can pay a small cost (US$6.99) to enjoy the coverage at full resolution with the ability to revisit and enjoy the highlights. Subscription discounts apply to multi-day full resolution packages.
