Force Back World Series is back!

Dust off your footy boots because the Tui Force Back World Series is back for its third consecutive year!

There’s still time for teams to organise their uniforms and start practising their punts, grubber kicks and catching skills in preparation for the February 16 event.

The third annual Tui Force Back tournament is being held at the Woodville Racing Club, 10kms north of the home of Tui – Mangatainoka.

Force back is a popular game among the lads on footy fields, backyards and beaches throughout the country. A game sees two teams of seven battle it out for 18 minutes to hoof the football and bounce it across their opponents’ goal line.

Teams from all over the country make the pilgrimage to the Woodville to vie for the coveted World Series trophy. Those wanting to enter a team need to go to www.tui.co.nz to register.

For an entry fee of a paltry $400, teams get eight T-shirts (one for the manager), hats to keep the sun at bay, a rugby ball, free camping on the site and entry to the after-party with a cracker of a band.

Plus breakfast (cooked and served by the Tui Brewery girls of course) and tours at the Tui brewery on Sunday.

The weekend tournament kicks off with “pre-conditioning” at the local Dudley Arms on Friday night. Punters will camp there for the night before match day.

“The Tui Brewery girls will be out in force to keep teams well-hydrated and focussed on the task at hand,” says Jarrod Bear from Tui.

“Around 65 teams entered last year and more than 3,000 spectators supported from the sidelines. We’re hoping this year’s World Series will be even bigger.”

Kick off is at the Woodville Racing Club at 10.00am on February 16.

The Tui Brewery is open for tours from Monday – Friday 10.30am – 1.00pm, Saturday at 1.00pm and 2.00pm off SH1 Mangatainoka.

PS: For the ladies:

The aim is to kick the ball down the field towards the opposition’s goal line. If the ball falls short, it’s then the other teams turn to take a punt A kick is taken from where the ball lands, or from where the opposing team catches it. The overall aim is to move your team up the field by kicking and catching and then finally getting the ball over the line. A point is scored when the ball bounces over the back line, not if it goes over on the full. Games are played for nine minutes each way, with a minute in the middle for a half time orange. Seven players make up a squad, with four on the field at any one time. The first team with three points on the board wins.
