Inspired by Light and Nature

"Nature never gets colour wrong!" For Fay Looney, the multi-award-winning Taranaki photographer and author, this simple statement has held true over many years of photography.

'Nature's Light' an exhibition of photographs by this internationally renowned artist, opens at Puke Ariki on Saturday 19 January and will run until 10 March.

"Nature's light is different in other countries and even in other provinces," she says. "One thing is for sure, when Nature decides to mix ocean blues and greens and skies of red, it's a breathtaking moment and I have been lucky to sometimes be there."

Describing herself as "technically inept", Fay explains her landscapes as being "lit by nature."

"In the past when I was taking portraits it was only when I was caught by the weather have I felt the need to light a subject," says Fay, who uses a tripod, one camera with an 18-200 zoom, nature's light and being there as her absolute necessities.

"Printing images always seem to take them two degrees from the real thing despite today's technology. I still feel some frustration when viewing the end print of an image I am excited about and the light box takes me there to enjoy the moment again," says Fay.

Fay solved a dilemma when displaying her images by using light boxes which allow the viewer to see the image as she did when shooting it.
