Karen Walker At New York, New York
Karen Walker At New York, New York
KAREN WALKER showed for the forth time at New York Fashion Week on the 5th of February; just days after her first New York retail space opened.
Inspiration for the Autumn / Winter 2008 collection, Angel, is drawn from Edwardian children’s wear and dolls’ clothes.
The range is true to Walker’s signature pushing together of extremes featuring acid wash denims teamed with doll-like Edwardian style dresses in cream cottons with frills, pintucking and lace details; military tailoring in chunky flannels teamed with intense florals and shrunken coats in scarlet and cobolt.
Prints include classical Russian style florals in intense red and blue and a trippy, circular watercolour while graphics feature intricate doily style interpretations of flies, fighter jets and the classic Runaway girl logo executed in puff paint and delicate crochet patches.
The collection was, as always, styled by Heathermary Jackson and is Karen and Heathermary’s 13th season together.
The range was once again met with high praise from the world’s leading global fashion media.
The season coincides with the collaboration between KAREN WALKER and New York concept store THE DEN.
THE DEN reinvents itself every 2 to 3 months as a pop-up flagship store for the hippest brands. Cheap Monday and Rag and Bone were the first brands to feature in THE DEN and others on the agenda include Tim Hamilton and Robert Gellar of Cloak.
With each reinvention the store has a total refit so it truly tells the story of the brand that’s making it home for that season. Karen’s trusted interior designer, globally acclaimed Katie Lockhart, who has done the refit for Karen’s Auckland and Taipei stores, collaborated on the interior for this project also, ensuring that the KAREN WALKER signature is there in a fresh and exciting way.
A comprehensive array of Walker’s clothing, eye wear and fine jewellery lines have taken over the space for the three months from February 2008.
Karen says “We’re thrilled to be having a KAREN WALKER pop-up store in New York. We already have a strong presence in the New York market, especially since we show at New York Fashion Week every season and this is such an exciting way to bring the brand to another level there. “
THE DEN is the third store to be opened by Eddy Chai and Paul Birardi who own the very successful Odin menswear boutiques in Manhattan. THE DEN opened five months ago next to the first Odin boutique in the East Village. The first Odin opened in 2004 and last year was named the number one menswear store in the United States by GQ magazine.
Traveling with Karen to New York
this season was her new baby, 6 week old Valentina, who was
of no help to the show whatsoever but was super cute and
very much enjoyed her first fashion week.
