Vienna's stunning Eggner Trio returns to New Zealand this month performing a programme including New Zealand composer John Psathas' Island Songs.

Internationally-acclaimed and famed for their "musically impassioned togetherness", the Eggner Trio will perform in 10 centres nationwide as part of Chamber Music New Zealand's 2008 season.

The 2008 Eggner Trio tour begins in Christchurch on Tuesday 25 March with concerts in Dunedin, Invercargill, Nelson, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Hamilton, Napier, Auckland and Wellington.

The brothers from Vienna were audience favourites when they toured to New Zealand in 2006 and Chamber Music New Zealand is thrilled to welcome them back.

Founded in 1997, the Eggner Trio regularly performs concerts and festivals throughout Europe, North America and Japan. In 2003 they won the 2003 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and in 2006 were nominated for the Carnegie Hall Rising Stars Project.

Mentored and tutored by Juri Smirnov (Vienna Brahms Trio) Menahem Pressler (Beaux Arts Trio), Gunter Pichler and Thomas Kakuska (Alban Berg Quartet) the brothers individually have amassed a mantelpiece full of prizes and awards. Georg Eggner plays a Joseph Gagliano violin (1779) and Florian Eggner a Carl Richter cello (1907).

At the heart of the Eggner Trio programme on their New Zealand tour is John Psathas' striking Island Songs, a piece inspired by the unique rhythms of Greek dances and especially selected by the trio for this tour.

The programme in Christchurch, Invercargill, Hamilton and Wellington also includes Mozart's Trio in G and Tchaikovsky's lushly romantic tribute to Arthur Rubinstein. Dunedin, New Plymouth, Napier, Auckland, Nelson and Palmerston North audiences experience the trio performing Beethoven's graceful Trio in E flat, while Dunedin, New Plymouth, Napier and Auckland audiences have Brahms' Trio in B, and Nelson and Palmerston North audiences will hear Alexander von Zemlinsky's Piano Trio in D minor.
