BEYOND WORDS
Adele Jackson

Beyond Words explores the power of non-verbal language. Gestures, body language and sign language all exist in this silent space. Large-scale drawings capture fragments of poetry expressed as sign language and trace the moment of transition between the non-verbal and the visual.

Inspired by the poems of US poet Cole Swensen, this exchange of imagery between hand-signer and artist crosses linguistic boundaries.

Adele has also explored the essentials of supplementary communication through juxtaposed images of gesture or hand-shape, inviting us to apply our own context to them. Through this show, hands and eyes meet as words emerge like birds.

Gallery Hours 12.00 - 7.00pm or by appointment - 021 275 4495.

New work which affirms my belief in painting. In this series, I continue to undo the support of painting by fraying. Unlike earlier works, these paintings do not operate in terms of figure/ground shift but rather tease the viewer into looking through a window through which there can be no view. "I think there are always going to be people who like something which is silent, static and incontrovertible. Because for the same reason that in our actual lives, we don't want a continuous, thin-sensory bombardment, you just want to have areas of silence, and areas of reflection." Robert Hughes, Art Critic.
