HAYDEN
Fresh off a sold-out theatre tour of his
native Canada, Galesburg and Strange News are very pleased
to bring back Indie-Folk artist Hayden to New Zealand for
two very special and intimate performances. Hayden’s music
combines elements of rock and folk, along with disturbingly
personal sentiments and a voice that channels both the
falsetto highs of Neil Young and the wavering raspy low
tones of Leonard Cohen.
Here’s a sample of some of the
praise Hayden has received from the World Press:
THE
ONION/NEW YORK
“Hayden draws from the traditions of
eccentric folk-rock, but his ragged, harrowing concoction of
acoustic gentility and electric anarchy stands as a genre
all its own.”
MOJO – GOLD SEAL OF APPROVAL (“a
release of exceptional quality”)
“The album's
unequivocal genius slaps you upside the head. Everything
about this record - musicianship, songcraft, lyrics – is
superior.”
ALTERNATIVE PRESS
“A little bit country,
a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, Hayden crafts each song like
a musical photograph---scenic, colourful and keenly
observant”.
HARP
“…an artist of remarkable depth
and potential, becoming someone who inspires comparison
rather than invites it”.
TIME OUT/LONDON
”Lovely,
cracked, off-key vocals, winsome melodies and brilliant
lyrics”.
Tickets are $25 + bf and on sale now through
Slowboat Records (Wellington) and Real Groovy
(Auckland)

JALI BUBA KUYATEH (SENEGAL)
NZ TOUR APRIL
2008
Rarely do you see such a complete musician as Jali
Buba Kuyateh. Born in The Gambia but residing between
Casamance in the southern region of Senegal, and Bakau in
The Gambia, now living in Victoria Australia. Jali Buba
comes from a griot (hereditary musician) family, where he
has played kora since the age of five. He had composed 3
tracks by the age of ten and currently has composed over 100
tracks. Jali comes from the famous Kuyateh family of Medina
Wandifa. All his brothers play kora, sing and dance. His
father, Jali Dembel Kuyateh and his mother Jali Fenda
Kuyateh, were well known throughout Senegambia. His older
brother, Jali Lamin Kuyateh, is the premier kora player with
the Senegalese National Ballet.
A master of traditional kora tunes, Jali Buba has applied his kora to the Afro Manding styles, soukous of Mali and Guinee Conakry, the mbalax made so popular by Youssou N’dour, reggae, salsa, jazz and the blues.
Jali Buba has played with Groupe Sop Xadim,, Baaba Maal’s younger brother Ahmed Maal, Groupe Dia, Cheikh Lo, Groupe Buntaloo and Silaba in Dakar, Tata Dindin, Pa Bobo Jobarteh and the Kaira Band, the famous Fisco Band, Roots Kunta Kinteh and 5 Star Band in The Gambia.
In 2005 Jali Buba toured Australia continuing to captivate his audiences with his amazing talent and addictive style of performing. Jali appeared at festivals around Australia including WOMADelaide, Woodford and Port Fairy Folk Festivals, to name a few. He was invited to perform with some of Australia’s top musicians including jazz legend Bob Sedergreen, guitarist Doug DeVries, violinist Nigel McLean, South African performer Valanga Khoza, and West African musicians, Afro Moses, and the Mohata brothers, as well as being interviewed by all the leading Australian radio stations.
Jali Buba Kuyateh has the ability to captivate an audience on his own or with a band. He sings like Youssou N’dour and plays kora like Toumani Diabate. He’s a brilliant entertainer and to watch him play as he gets lost in his music is an absolute delight. He not only plays and sings, but he dances while he plays! He has many fans right throughout Senegal, Gambia, and now Australia, and he is recognised and greeted everywhere he goes by people in the street. He’s Senegambia’s best kept secret, now residing in Australia! In April 2008 he makes his first New Zealand tour.
Jali plays Happy, corner Tory and Vivian Sts, Wellington on 1 April, 8pm. Door charge $15 (cash) from 7.30pm. info on Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.
REVIEWS
Very
exciting... I'm looking forward to working with a genuine
African prodigy!"
Bob Sedergreen - Australian jazz
legend
"No one should miss this talented
performer."
Therese Virtue - The Boite World Music
Cafe
"Jali Buba Kuyateh is a captivating performer with
exceptional skill and emotional power. He combines florid
arabesques on his kora with virtuosic melismas from his
voice, that is at times reminiscent of the vocal stylings of
Youssou N'Dour, each phrase delivered with a commitment and
attack that is truly breathtaking. Added to this is his
dynamic range of styles and spontaneous flourishes of
improvised passages that can hold an audience spellbound.
His is a unique marriage of kora and voice stylings of his
region that forges new horizons for the Mandinkan tradition
from West Africa."

VIALKA -
http://www.vialka.com/
The dynamic duo of Marylise
Frecheville and Eric Boros have been lugging their nomadic
turbo folk sound and modus vivendi all over the planet since
the turn of the century, originally as the rhythm section of
the performance striptease jazz-punk trio NNY, and since
2002 as Vialka. They have resided in Switzerland, Slovenia,
Canada, and are currently calling a remote village in France
their home between tours. Deriving its influences from
traditional and modern underground music from around the
globe, Vialka's music is based on the frenetic interaction
between Marylise's syncopated drumming and singing and
Eric's orchestral guitar playing - and is delivered with
ecstatic energy, humor, lust for life, and a sophisticated
musical language and subliminal connection all their
own.
DANIEL MENCHE -

MR STERILE ASSEMBLY - www.skirted.net
biography
Daniel Menche has
established himself as a musician with a sense of focus and
determination uncharacteristic in a genre known for its
randomness and chaotic structure. Rather than creating
"noise," he strives for order and cohesiveness. His
presentation of sonic structures is similar to the way a
writer depicts a story, an allegory seems to arise, which
uses confusion as a symbol for the imaginative process of
total sound purity; aural intensity is not a representation
of confusion or the chaotic, but a concerted effort to
provoke and stimulate the listeners imagination by
generating intensely powerful sounds and music.
Daniel
Menche's work originates from the idea that there is no
restriction to the potential sound sources and especially
sonic energy. Any sounds - all sounds are used and exploited
to create the music. There are absolutely no barriers or
biases in what can be used and have been used. Self made and
recorded sound sources, percussion and instruments are the
main emphasis in creating a living and emotional feeling to
Daniel Menche's form of contemporary music. Subtle and
patient compositions rely on long, dense layers of droning
sounds, while abrasive pieces rely on sounds amplified and
processed to extreme levels, pushing the full spectrum of
frequencies to the most threshold of limits. Other
explorations are intense percussion work that resonates
primal chaos displayed gracefully without ever being just
"noise". While avoiding the theoretical aspects of
music-this is sound work that follows the path to explore
new emotions for music to obtain a one on one personal
impact with pure sound.
Daniel Menche's craft straddles
many hard-to-define boundaries and genres; it is an effort
to provoke confusion in order to enhance the mystery of it;
an effort to establish each release as a sonic identity.
This is not the music of the masses; rather, it is the music
of individuals who are adventurous in experiencing
challenging music. Indeed, Menche has amassed a sizable
discography on some the most discerning independent labels
in the world. Constantly performing live extensively
throughout North America, Europe and Japan with performances
that are intense and powerful. Characterized as both
extremely loud and patiently subtle, Daniel Menche's live
performances define its own sonic presence, an entity that
gives form to an emotional rawness with highly textural and
dominating sounds.
This is dedicated music that expresses
the undisciplined purity of emotion. Characterized by
forcefulness of sound, music that strives for one goal:
vehement beauty.
