WYD08 Papal Boat-a-cade announced

Captain Cook Cruises set to sail on Sydney Harbour as WYD08 Papal Boat-a-cade announced

Sydney Harbour will provide a spectacular backdrop for the official arrival of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI during World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08) in July.

WYD08 organisers today announced that Captain Cook Cruises will become the official cruise operator for the event and will provide the official entry vessel for His Holiness - The Sydney 2000.

Pope Benedict will arrive via a (13)-vessel “boat-a-cade” – a nautical adaptation of the traditional Papal motorcade.

The Sydney Harbour boat-a-cade will take place on Thursday 17 July. Pope Benedict will disembark at Barangaroo for an official welcome ceremony before more than 100,000 people.

“Captain Cook Cruises is one of Australia’s leading cruise operators and we’re excited to be partnering with them,” said Danny Casey, WYD08 Chief Operating Officer.

“The arrival of the Holy Father will be seen live around the world and will showcase our magnificent harbour to hundreds of millions of people.”

Captain Cook Cruises has hosted many world leaders including the Presidents of the United States and China, Germany’s Vice Chancellor and members of the British Royal family.

“It’s an honour to be involved with such a wonderful event, particularly one that brings the youth of the world together in a spirit of peace and goodwill,” said Anthony Haworth, General Manager Captain Cook Cruises.

Captain Cook Cruises will also provide two other vessels to accompany The Sydney 2000.

Sydney will host the 23rd World Youth Day from 15 – 20 July this year. Organised by the Catholic Church but open to all, WYD08 will mark the first visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Australia.
