INTERVIEW The premise is simple: a Washington news correspondent is assigned to interview a Paris Hilton type celebrity. He is disgusted with the assignment and does no homework, arriving at the interview knowing nothing about her. Having seen none of her work, Pierre only actually hates the idea of such a woman. Katya is so fed up with interviews she turns up an hour late and is surprised when she discovers Pierre barely knows who she is. Pierre makes no bones about the fact he would rather be in Washington covering a breaking news story. They abort the interview, but on leaving the restaurant paparazzi stalking Katya push Pierre into traffic. Katya insists on taking him home to her nearby apartment to take care of a cut on his head. Once there the pair drink, smoke, talk, flirt and play games with one another. Will they sleep together? Strangle one another. RED ROAD Deservedly the winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, Red Road is an intense thriller bristling with atmosphere. Set in the squalor of urban Glasgow, Jackie is a security guard whose job is to monitor a bank of surveillance screens overlooking a seedy housing project on Red Road. One day she sees a familiar man who she believed was in prison. Shocked to see he is free, she starts by tracking him on her surveillance equipment, but soon begins stalking him and insinuating herself into his life. What this man has done to Jackie, and why she is so determined to punish him is unclear. But as she grows closer to him the tension builds to an explosive and unexpected conclusion. Made within the confines of Lars von Trier’s experimental Advance Party Project, Red Road is the first of three films, by three different directors, using the same characters and actors. It will be tough for the next film maker to follow this exquisitely crafted story of crime, punishment and forgiveness.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN While out hunting Llewellyn Moss stumbles upon a gruesome scene. Dead bodies, heroin and cash are strewn across the desert floor. Foolishly Llewellyn decides to take the cash. He knows it is foolish and that very bad men will come after him, yet does it anyway. Sure enough it is not long before he is pursued by the psychopathic Anton Chigurh. Also watching him is local Sheriff Ed Tom who has spotted him on his return to the crime scene. Given that this is essentially a three man game of cat and mouse, an amazing amount of carnage builds up. Those who have not read the book will be shocked and thrilled by what comes on screen, while those who have will be delighted to see the novel done such cinematic justice. Regular Coen collaborator Roger Deakins shoots the unforgiving landscape with precise framing, making great use of the wide expanses and natural light. Visually and aurally this film is a masterpiece and for the Coens a very welcome return to their roots.
GOODBYE BAFANA As a prison guard in charge of Nelson Mandela, James Gregory was supposed to use his knowledge of the Xhosa language to spy on his prisoner. Instead he found himself sympathizing with his prisoner. Based on a true story, this film tells the story of a man whose core beliefs were changed by Mandela’s influence. This film tracks the unlikely but profound relationship between these very different men,
SWEENEY TODD Stephen Sondheim’s award winning
musical thriller is given the big screen treatment by master
of the macabre Tim Burton and his favourite leading man,
Johnny Depp. Barber Sweeney Todd is unjustly sent to prison
and vows to have his revenge. Upon returning to London to
re-open his barber shop, Todd becomes “the demon barber of
Fleet Street”, shaving gentlemen who are then never again
heard of. Mrs Burton, Helena Bonham Carter palys Todd’s
love interest and accomplice, Mrs Lovett, who creates
diabolical meat pies.
MICHAEL CLAYTON . George Clooney
plays the title character, a lawyer whose role within his
large corporate law firm is to clean up messes caused by the
firm’s clients. While returning from a job, he stops by
the roadside for a moment and his car blows up.The film then
backtracks four days to the near conclusion of a six year
class action suit against an agrochemical company. The
chief litigator, Arthur Evans is about to pull of a pretrial
settlement when he suffers a meltdown. Clayton rushes to
rescue him and clean up the mess left behind. Arthur
manages to elude him and make it back to Manhattan.Things
get trickier then, with the agrochemical company’s chief
counsel hiring shady characters to bump off Arthur, and
Michael’s investigations bringing him closer to the
truth.
LUST CAUTION Taiwanese director Ang Lee returns to the east for his follow up to Brokeback Mountain and does something unexpected and truly daring in taking a short story by Chinese writer Eileen Chang and spinning it into a saga of espionage, deceit, sexual humiliation and perversely, love. The film begins in Hong Kong, 1942 where a group of women are playing mah-jongg. It becomes clear that the youngest player, Mak Tai-Tai is secretly involved with Yee, whose wife is the host of the mah-jongg group. In a flashback to 1938 we see that Mak Tai-Tai is the false identity of shy schoolgirl Wong Chia Chi who is conscripted by a rebel leader to seduce Yee, a collaborator with the Japanese army and lead him to his death. Set up like a well made but conventional wartime spy drama, the film takes a startling turn after a sudden act of violence foils the rebels’ plans. Moral and political boundaries are blurred as both sides resort to brutal tactics to achieve their aims and Wong and Yee slide into a sadomasochistic love affair. Both a tightly constructed spy thriller and a rather bleak love story, Lust, Caution is a film about politics and love, and the lies we tell ourselves about them. ONCE Many films are touted to be “the feel-good film of the year”, Many films are touted to be “the feel-good film of the year”, but Once really lives up to it. Set in Dublin this is a sweet romance set to the music of its central singer-songwriter couple.
AFTER THE WEDDING. Mikkelsen plays Jacob, an aid worker in an Indian orphanage. He makes a reluctant trip home to Denmark to court a billionaire and convince him to contribute funds to the orphanage. If he does not succeed, the orphanage will close The billionaire, Jorgen, proves to be a formidable man who is clearly used to having people jump to his command. Jorgen invites Jacob to his daughter’s wedding, which is to be held the next day, saying that it will give them time to get to know each other. Jacob goes because there is no saying no to Jorgen, and walks straight into his past in the form of Jorgen’s wife, an old flame. From this moment the film becomes a series of searing one-on-one encounters. There are secrets, accusations, tears and much more.
