Top musicians encourage young Kiwi song-writers

Top musicians and sports legends rally round to help encourage young Kiwi song-writers (tomorrow)

Rugby legend Waka Nathan will take to the stage to sing live with the Mt Roskill Primary School ukulele orchestra, and a huge tour poster signed by the members of Split Enz is about to go under the hammer to benefit the Play It Strange Charitable Trust.

SJD, Cydel, Graham Brazier, Dave McArtney and others will also play live in A Night with Strange Friends’ at the ASB Lounge at Eden park, 7pm Thursday 17th April.

These popular New Zealand musicians will perform together with emerging young songwriters Anna Macdonald and Louis Baker, both finalists in the Play It Strange National Secondary Schools Songwriting Contest. Former Split Enz members Mike Chunn and Robert Gillies and their sons will also perform at this glittering event as will a 30 piece ukulele orchestra.

The Play It Strange Charitable Trust nurtures fresh new song writing talent amongst young New Zealand School students from all walks of life. Youngsters are encouraged to develop interests and skills in songwriting and musical performance.

Play It Strange CEO, Mike Chunn says “This is going to be a real night to remember with big name musicians sharing the stage and performing together with some really talented young songwriters. Play It Strange is all about helping young New Zealanders realise their musical dreams, that’s what we do through the songwriting contest and the Band of Strangers concerts and we hope in hearing these young stars guests will allow us to continue to get the on cd and making a career out of music”.

Other auction items include a tour of the Weta Workshop, lunch with Sean Fitzpatrick and Waka Nathan, a round of golf with Sir Bob Charles, an Americas Cup yacht race with Don McGlashan and Murray Thom and an original artwork by Otis Frizzell and Jordan Luck.
