Green films screen for World Environment
Day
A short film festival aimed at inspiring locally focused action
For World Environment Day, June 5, the Environment Centre at the Sustainability Trust has organised a unique event – the Sustainable Communities Film Festival.
World Environment Day’s focus is on “kicking the carbon habit” and these films showcase real stories of local and international action for a lower carbon footprint through community action.
The festival will run over three days with an Opening Gala at the Paramount Theatre on Thursday 5 June at 11.30am, and continuing with evening sessions at the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre on 6 & 7 June from 7pm.
The launch day will premier the film Sustainable Communities which has been co-produced by the Sustainability Trust and video blog site Inspirational TV. The short movie tracks the progress of The Sustainability Trust’s current Newtown-based community sustainability action programme, and also sets out the tools and resources groups need to get going on their own.
To complete the festival Environment Centre Co-ordinator Emet Degirmenci-Alpay has gathered a diverse range of short films by contacting individual producers regionally, nationally and internationally. Some of them will participate in panel discussions as part of the festival.
”The purpose of this event is to encourage the wider public to take community action for their sustainable future.” Emet says.
“We have invited the producers because in this way, the audience will find an opportunity to hear about the experiences of these producers and hopefully be motivated to create their own community films.”
