2008 Iwi Powerpulling Champs
The might of Waikato-Tainui power houses could be felt, if tribal members get in to throw their weight behind the 2008 Iwi Powerpulling Champs being held next month at Hopuhopu.
In conjunction with the National NZ Powerpulling Championships, this will be the first time an iwi/hapuu/Marae section has been added to the competition.
With many iwi incorporating powerpulling as part of their iwi games and festivals, Kaiwhakahaere o Waikato Heremaia Samson said he is encouraging all iwi, hapuu and Marae to get involved and enter teams.
“This competition is slightly different in that there are no prior requirements to qualify; it’s as simple as getting a team together and entering. Here’s a sport where a little power and a lot of technique comes into play. I’m confident there are many whaanau out there interested in having a go so I’m encouraging everyone to put in a team.”
The iwi section will have both an Open Mens and Open Womens division, with no weight restriction for either. A registration fee of $25 per team is required and teams within the iwi section will only compete against each other.
“There are plenty of powerhouses out there within our tribe and the challenge has been put to all iwi. This is an opportunity for Waikato-Tainui to show the rest of the motu what we’re made of,” Heremaia said.
The 2008 National New Zealand Powerpulling Championships will be held Saturday July 05 at Hopuhopu Sports Complex, Ngaaruawaahia.
