Enjoy a winter series of free Sunday Concerts at Museum of Wellington

Beginning Sunday July 13 the Museum of Wellington is pleased to present a series of free music concerts, in collaboration with Acoustic Routes. Concerts will take place every Sunday until August 31 at both 2.00pm and 3.30pm, with refreshments available during the half hour break.

The hour-length Sunday Concerts have been programmed to showcase a diverse range of acoustic styles, all performed by accomplished musicians from across New Zealand. Each concert is different. The eclectic programme covers everything from folk, country and blues through to gypsy jazz.

Of interest will be the female barbershop quartet from Aotea College, Wellington, a ‘muckle song’ concert (songs that reflect the timelessness on the human condition) and the internationally acclaimed harpist Celia Briar. The final concert in the series is by Phillipa Gander, who will perform music and songs for the hurdy gurdy.

The Sunday Concerts take place in the Museum’s von Kohorn room, once the home to the Wellington Harbour Board, now carefully restored to its original 1920s splendour.

The Museum of Wellington is establishing a tradition of hosting free concerts over winter, with almost 18,000 people attending the 2006 Wellingtonia Live festival, and the 2007 Alfred Hill concert series also proving very popular. The new 2008 Sunday Concerts series is complemented by Memory – an intangible map, a theatre show presented in collaboration with Voice Arts Trust, opening Sunday 27 July at 1pm.

The Sunday Concerts offer people a free and enjoyable way to brighten up their Sundays over winter.
