Top fiddler for Nelson concert

One of New Zealand's most promising young violinists will be in Nelson this weekend to perform at the School of Music's Winter Festival concert featuring the Nelson Symphony Orchestra.

Orchestra spokesman Richard Wells says they are thrilled to have secured Jennifer Banks to join them for the concert on Saturday night at the School of Music Auditorium.

"We consider ourselves very lucky to have Jennifer coming to Nelson to join us for this concert," he said. "It's also a good opportunity for her as it can be quite difficult for young musicians to secure a soloist role like this."

The Nelson Symphony Orchestra will be under the baton of freelance conductor Ken Young for the concert, which features two works by Sibelius - the well known Finlandia, which was the soundtrack to the 1970 Expo film about New Zealand, and the virtuosic Sibelius Violin Concerto which will allow Jenny Banks to demonstrate her talent.

Jenny started playing the violin at the age of four in Alexandra and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Otago and the University of Toronto.

She is now studying at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She has performed with the Southern Sinfonia for their 'Last Night of the Proms', the University of Toronto Symphony and the New Zealand School of Music Orchestra
as the winner of the concerto competitions at both of these institutions. She goes on from the Nelson concert to perform with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra before returning to her studies in Boston.

The concert is on Saturday night at 8pm at the Nelson School of Music, tickets range form $20-$30 and are on sale at the School of Music or online at wwwnsom.ac.nz
