Wellington Improvisation Troupe and The Improv Divas present

“…I laughed so hard I couldn’t see.” Salient

New Zealand’s only all-female improv ensemble, The Improv Divas are back with the adrenaline fuelled classic crime adventure: Improv Angels.

With the help of ‘Charlie’ and some key information from the audience, the Divas will take the world on an hour long improvised journey. It’s a hair-tossing attempt to spontaneously solve the latest mysterious crime wave, save New Zealand and maintain meaningful friendships at the same time.

“There is a myth out there that women can’t be funny,” says long time Diva and creator of Improv Angels, Clare Kerrison. “Even though stand up divas like Michele A’Court have proven this isn’t true, the myth persists that only women who behave like men get the laughs.”

“We’ve shown that we can find love and be hilarious. And now we’ve taken on the action genre but it’s still ultimately about relationships. For example: can you still kick-butt with your best friend when she’s sleeping with the super villian? These are everyday questions that women, and many men, are aching for answers to.”

Created by the Wellington Improvisation Troupe (WIT) to develop women in improv, the Improv Divas have spearheaded WIT’s reputation as long form storytellers. In 2005, they created the sold out one hour romantic comedy Lovepossibly, a genre in which they generously invited the most sensitive of WIT’s leading men to play with them.

The Divas debuted Improv Angels in the Comedy Festival this year. “All-men improv can come across as a very assertive get-in-there style; Improv Divas is a welcome balance where the female energy is on a slow burn that really delivers.” Patrick Davies, Theatreview

Improv Angels continues ‘Wednesdays with WIT’ at the Blue Note Bar, an initiative started by Derek Flores, who will play Charlie for the Improv Angels. “Yes, Charlie is a man and we’re okay with that,” says Kerrison. “You tell us the crime and we’ll show you that women can do anything… with heels on.”
