Nickelodeon are getting closer and closer to finding New Zealand’s youngest talented rock stars, with three finalist bands chosen for the 2008 Nick Rocks competition…

This year’s Nick Rocks competition has been a roaring success with over 60 recorded entries received from kid bands based all around the country.

Waikanae band No Man’s Land entered their single ‘The Rampage’ into Nick Rocks in July, even though they’ve only performed it once at the Waikanae School assembly. This competition could be just the ticket for the seven band members, who share the dream to write and perform their own original music one day.

RPM (Rock Per Minute) from Papamoa in the Bay of Plenty have rocked their local community on numerous occasions, festivals and school assemblies – but they could be rocking the nation now that they’ve made it as a Nick Rocks finalist. Putting the practise in twice a week has certainly been worth it so far.

The five band members of Too Funky have also been putting in considerable practise for the Nick Rocks competition. Based in Raumati and inspired by local Wellington bands including The Volunteers and The Black Seeds, these guys just can’t wait to see their music video on air this month.

All three finalists will have a music video made of the track they submitted. The music videos will air on Nickelodeon (SKY Channel 41) from Sunday 17th through to 31st of August. Viewers can vote for their favourite Nick Rocks finalist band either online at http://nicknz.co.nz or via SMS. By the end of August Nickheads all around NZ will have cast their votes to decide the overall winner who will be announced on-air and on-line on Sunday 7th September.

“The three finalists for 2008 Nick Rocks just go to prove that there really is a vast amount of undiscovered talent and creativity out there amongst Kiwi kids,” says Nickelodeon Marketing Manager, Lauren Nola. “The Nick NZ team were completely overwhelmed and inspired by the amount of effort put into all the entries received, and a huge thanks goes out to every single band out there who entered – you certainly impressed us!”

This year’s Nick Rocks winning band will record their single and have a music video professionally produced and aired on Nickelodeon throughout the year for all Nick-heads to see. They will also feature in Upstart Magazine – receiving true rock-star treatment, interviews and radio play on Classic Hits.

Last year’s winners, Without Conscious Thought, recorded an original track and filmed an amazing music video produced by Nickelodeon. The music video was played on Nickelodeon for Nickheads around NZ to see and they submitted their video into another competition and won the ‘Juice TV Best Video Award’. They also performed at the ‘Shine 2008’ youth music concert. If Without Conscious Thought’s success is anything to go by, winning the 2008 Nick Rocks competition could just be the ticket to making it big for some unknown Kiwi kid band out there.
